Yellow Circle

2026

Yellow Circle is an improvisational performance, inspired by Kurt Schwitters’s Merzbau, that creates a sound sculpture composed of discarded materials. It is a meaningless labor of listening to the voices of waste materials, which are first assembled, then damaged, and finally dismantled. It seeks a poor sound—one lacking in timbral attraction. It articulates an ecology of poverty that resists the compulsion toward material abundance and productivity. Yellow Circle offers a phase-topological consideration of Nana Shimomura’s Topos–Logos (2024), translating it into an alternative mode of expression. All materials used for the improvisation were collected by Shimomura herself, and some overlap with those employed in Topos–Logos. However, whereas Topos–Logos uses fabric and square canvases as supports, preserving on the surface of the work the traces of drawn lines and the time invested in their making, Yellow Circl employs a metal disc that, as a mobile sound sculpture, continually erases and overwrites the traces of movement.
